Orkney

Me and my mum are heading to Scotland again. Its somewhere we both love to be, even if it means a nine hour train to get there. It has stunning scenery and lovely people, and has that magical quality only possible beaten by Amsterdam, but only just. Plus there’s no flying, which my mum isn’t a fan of, and those airport queues are a major anxiety trigger for me.

Its going to be a Great Scottish Railway Adventure, all the way to the top. We’ll be staying in Inverness, but heading off to John o’Groats, Wick, and Orkney.

I know its going to be a fantastic time. I loved visiting Inverness last time, in 2021. It was a really pretty and peaceful place, with incredible coffees, and that hidden woodland around the river Ness was magical, somewhere I often return to when meditating.

But I am really excited about Orkney. Not only is it somewhere I haven’t been. But it is a home of my old friends the Norse, of the Vikings long ago. There’s a stone circle, and an ancient Neolithic village, and I know I’m going to love it. I will probably get inspired and write many flash fictions about it, and I know the scenery is supposed to be stunning.

Its a new adventure, sailing across the sea from John o’Groats, into the unknown, off to the old Norse. And I’m excited.
