Designer of Worlds

There are many programmes, movies, and documentaries about Tolkien. But that one was the best.

Its called J.R.R.Tolkien: Designer of Wolrds and it was fantastic.

They delved into all his works, including the lost tales and the silmarillion. They told his story, properly, fully, from beginning to end. There was soft music, set to woodlands and houses, to the places Tolkien loved. Of course there was war too, narrated by his letters to his publisher, which made it even more enjoyable, for I learned his trilogys journey as we went though the years. There were his original drawings, his maps, and his sketches, all there to see.

They talked of his love of Languages, and of mythology, of Norse and Finnish and Icelandic, and his delight in Volsungs. Which to me, and to Tolkien, was and is the most important part. And I loved learning how he pored over them all, even at an early age.

But most of all, they included him. I thought his son might feature, as he compiled many of the stories Tolkien left unfinished, and fuelled the Hobbit in the beginning. But Tolkien was the biggest surprise. There he was, on my screen, talking, sitting in front of a bookshelf on a comfortable sofa, inviting me into his world, and the kens he had created. He told his story, and even read out parts of the Lord of the Rings, and I leant new things of him, his worlds, and of C.S.Lewis.

It was like listening to a friend. I thought it would be. But it felt more intimate, with him chatting, as if he was in the room, as if he talked to me. And it filled my heart with joy.

By the end, I was blown away. Mesmerised. Enchanted. I was reminded of how much I love his work. How much fantasy meant to him, and to me. For we both have shared a yearning to escape, for something more, to create worlds of wonder, to retell old myths.

I really enjoyed that documentary, more than any other.
