Wizards vs Aliens

One of my favourite programmes of all time is Wizards vs Aliens.

It’s on iPlayer, and it’s about Tom Clarke, a teenage boy wizard who has to deal with school life and aliens called the Necross, from outer space, who want to feast on the wizards magic. And its brilliant.

It has a stellar soundtrack, that lifts everything, from softer moments to the aliens attacking, the orchestra really going for it. Its one of these stories that doesn’t need to explain every detail, or have intricate backstories. Instead, it just jumps right into this rich and wonderful world and runs riot with it.

It has some terrific plot lines, and wonderful characters. Brian Blessed takes the stage As the King of the Necross, his voice booming and bellowing with power. There’s his children, Varg and Lexi, who are always trying to outsmart each other, but end up being more than theu seem. Annette Barnard shines as Ursula, the grandmother figure still having fun and being just as powerful as Tom. And who could forget Randal Moon, with his odd ways, sensitive soul, and funny nature?

It’s one of the few shows where the aliens seem realistic, like that CGi could actually be part of their bodies. It’s full of colour, vibrant greens and blues, and even darker scenes in the Chamber are still visible. It’s full of action, and adventure. But also school life, of love and loss. Of course there is the whole saving saving world and the wizards business. But thats not all of it.

For at its heart, is Benny and Tom, a friendship of opposites. It shouldn’t work, a scientist and a wizard. But it does, and its beautifully done. It’s something unexpected, that only grows as the show continues. And everyone ends up liking Benny, even Moon in the end. And that scene where Benny leaves for America is still one of the saddest moments in TV.

And some of its finales, with the salute, are some of the most stunning visual sets I’ve seen in a long time. Sure, the show finishes on an odd note, but it works. It ties Caractus Crowe to the present, an ancestor who is name dropped throughout, back to the present, and almost ends the conflict with the Necross. It’s implied that the fight continues, but that’s where the series ends.

I love it, and could watch it again and again, and have many times.
